Disasters are becoming more frequent and more expensive due to a combination of climate change, which intensifies extreme weather events like hurricanes and wildfires, and increased exposure, as more people and assets are located in high-risk areas. The National Center for Disaster Preparedness’ US Natural Hazards and Climate Change maps project that, by the mid-century, the U.S. will experience increases in wildfires, tropical cyclones/hurricanes, and sea level rise. According to the Climate Vulnerability Finance Index (CliF-VI), many countries are in need of financing for climate adaptation, but are unable to access sufficient capital for it. To help individuals, businesses, and communities better prepare, NCDP has worked with the private sector, along with local, state, Tribal, and federal emergency management agencies on training, planning, and technical initiatives to make communities more resilient.
